Associative potential of English hipponyms

Introduction. The study highlights the need for more research concerning the hipponymic subframe of modern English, as a set of proper names of Thoroughbred horses that are actively involved in sports competitions, as well as proper names of hobby horses which serve as pets. We investigate the forms of existence and structure of the associative field of English hipponyms in the mental lexicon of native English speakers through a free associative experiment, which serves as the best method for identifying the semantic content of hipponymic concepts. The purpose of the article is the analysis of hipponyms in the mental lexicon, i.e. in the mind of an individual and not in language or speech. The object of the study is the real-official, real non-official and virtual horse names of the English language. The subject is English hipponyms as phenomena of mental lexicon. Materials and methods. The descriptive method and the method of analysis are used in course of the research. A free onomastic associative experiment was held, based on the interview of250 English-speaking respondents who were offered 6 hipponymic stimuli, and the results were interpreted. In accordance with the results of the survey 1480 associative reactions were received. Results. On the basis of the data obtained the peculiarities of horse name representation in the mental lexicon of native English speakers were studied.Conclusions. The findings of the present experiment helped to establish the structure of the associative field of real official, real non-official and virtual horse names and their place in the English world picture. The results point to an interesting trend. The dominant types of reactions on hipponym-stimuli are hyperonymic and synonymic, which is determined by the nature of human thinking, which primarily tries to assign onym to a certain class or to give it individual characteristics. Most of the participants of our experiment provided the reactions of recognition and identified the hipponyms of the real official and virtual sectors, which indicates high popularity of these names among native English speakers. Only few respondents identified popular real non-official hipponym-stimuli as horse names.
Historical principles of the term chrematonym genesis and the borders of the chrematonymic field

It became necessary to investigate the problem concerning the study of the proper names of unique things — chrematonyms. In this paper we offer several viewpoints of significant Slovak and foreign (Czech, Polish, Russian and German) onomasticians regarding the problem of specifying and defining chrematonyms in the onymic system. At the same time, we offer our own suggestion for the classification of chrematonyms. 1854 chrematonyms resulted in discovery of common ways in the process of their generating and functioning. There is no general notion about the borders of chrematonymy in Ukrainian onomastic science. The attention is paid to the fact that the borders of chrematonymic field are open. The article stresses the importance of chrematonomastic terms establishment, so that this field of onomastics can be an equal partner of other disciplines and at the same time fulfill the denomination needs of other languages. The purpose of the work is the analysis of the existing in linguistics definitions of the term chrematonym, their comparison and systematization, and their distinguishing between chrematonym classes. Also the analysis of different ways of proper names investigation is carried out. The definition of the term chrematonym is suggested and the classification of chrematonyms is created. The subject of the study is English chrematonyms from the view point of their classification and systemization. The object of the study is English onymic system. The research states that one of the most important facts of naming is the influence of the surrounding social and physical environment and the owner’s desire to fix the extraordinarity of a definite type. Choosing and giving the name to the object, a man more often doesn’t create anything new; he just gives it a name, trying to bring it to eternity. One of the most ancient traditions that has been practically used for so long is the owner’s personal name application. The article also determines and enumerates the functions of onyms, especially of chrematonyms. They are as follows: singling out, characterizing, identifying and signifying. Proper names of unique objects exist to perform a background for a man and his life, picking out definite features, reflecting his process of thinking; to show the objective reality; to open up the speaker’s inner world, his creative personality. The method of systematization is used in the work. Summing up, the individual chrematonimic field comprises 7 subfields, 39 subsubfields and 6 microfields (segments). As a result of the investigation, the definition of the term chrematonym was suggested and the classification of chrematonyms was created.
Linguistic analysis of Great Britain’s toponyms

The given article deals with structural and semantic features of Great Britain’s toponymy. The author examines those historical peculiarities of the English language development which influenced geographical proper names; classifies toponyms according to their etymology as well as investigates foreign elements within contemporary names structure. In the course of carried out research the author draws a con¬clusion that toponyms reflect the whole British Isles’ history and were formed under the influence of Latin, Anglo-Saxon, Scandinavian and Norman-French. This fact, finally, yielded one common system of names.
Problematics of cognitive onomastics

The objective of this article is systematization of the theoretical premises of cognitive onomastics, so it is aimed at specification of the corresponding terminological apparatus as well as certain basic notions. The object of the investigation embraces mental being of proper names, while its subject — organization of onymic concepts in the mental lexicon of man. Proper names exist in the language, while the language exists in the heads of human beings, in their mental lexicons, and emerges as speech in communicative acts. What onymic entities exist in mental lexicon and in what forms — that is the main problem of cognitive onomastics, which makes it a com-pletely new trend in the study of proper names. Entering mental lexicon, due to the processes of conceptualization and categorization, onyms transform into concepts and find their place, formingframes and subframes. Onymic concepts, understood as the unit of information storage, may exist in two forms: active and passive, the former being actualized in the process of their immediate employment in communication, while the latter is applied to the concepts, which are not in the immediate use, only stored in memory depository in the form of embryos of thought. Onymic concepts are connected with other elements of mental lexicon as their organizers, optimizing the functioning of mental lexicon and increasing its effectiveness. Future trends of this research should be aimed at widening of the repertory of the investigated languages in order to establish common and distinctive features of the onymic fragments in the ethnic conceptual and verbal images of the world.
Reverse onymic dictionary across 15 years

Introduction. The article is dedicated to the comparison of two reverse onymic associative dictionaries. This project provides a significant opportunity to advance the understanding of onomastic identity in the changing onomastic landscape. The case study’s findings should provide valuable insight into the associative aspect of the onomastic landscape where memetic landmarks could be revealed. Purpose. The article’s purpose is to compare two reverse onymic associative dictionaries. Consequently, the research object is the onymic component of the associative field of the stimuli, the subject being the associative distribution of the onymic reactions to the onymic stimuli and their comparative analysis. Materials and methodology. The datasets on which we base our investigation are drafted from the 2006 and 2021 free associative experiments conducted in Odesa I. I. Mechnikov University with 100 participants each. We investigated correlations between associations and stimuli, taking onymic reactions into particular focus. In this paper, we present the entries compiled in the following way: from associations to their stimuli, listed in alphabetical order. Results. The current study reveals that onymic reactions cover all the classes of proper names, including anthroponyms, toponyms, ethnonyms, theonyms, ideonyms, zoonyms, chrematonyms, chrononyms, ergonyms, phytonyms, cosmonyms. The dynamics may be presented as follows: a significant increase in the number of onymic reactions is observed in chrononyms — 2.6 times, chrematonyms — 2.3 times, theonyms — 1.8 times, which indicates growing importance of time, material values and spiritual beliefs, especially taking into consideration peculiarities of the Covid pandemic period with its high death rate, social distancing, lockdowns; a decrease of associates that belong to ergonyms — 3.25 times and anthroponyms — 1.3 times may be a sign of the fact that the value of a person and a group of people diminishes, less connection with the group is felt, the sense of belonging to a group is eroded together with the growing understanding of the feeling of transience, of time value; decrease of associates-toponyms — 1.4 times and ethnonyms — 1.3 times lays bare lessening of ties to the location and a corresponding ethnic group with a sense of individualization. The dramatic shifts in the mental onomastic landscape of the informants became evident during the comparison of both datasets.

Антропонимия как средство раскрытия характера в романе В.В. Набокова «Лолита»

В романе «Лолита» антропонимия настолько же органична, насколько и оригинальна, т.к. в отличие от многих других авторов у этого писателя она является чуть ли не ключевым приемом раскрытия сложного,противоречивого и очень трудного для понимания характера главного героя. Модификации его имени так богаты и в количественном, и в качественном отношении, что позволяют говорить о созданном Набоковым своеобразном антропонимиконе Гумберта Гумберта и представляют возможность составить достаточно полную классификацию «подприемов», способов, с помощью которых рождается поразительное многообразие вариантов имени.

Статтю присвячено дослідженню асоціативного поля влас- них назв, які є видатними пунктами онімного ландшафту. Метою стат- ті є аналіз асоціативних реакцій. Об’єктом дослідження є антропоніми та топоніми, які наявні в українському онімному ландшафті. Предметом до- слідження є властивості асоціативного образу власних назв українського онімного ландшафту. Методологія нашого дослідження включає в себе про- ведення вільного асоціативного експерименту та відстеження формування асоціативного гештальту онімного поля. Під час роботи було поставлено за- вдання: виявити сутність семантичних гештальтів асоціативного онімного поля. Стимулами для анкети вільного асоціативного експерименту стали широковідомі власні назви, які циркулюють в українському сегменті Інтер- нету та у сучасному культурному ландшафті. Власні назви Кличко, Юлія Тимошенко, Маруся Чурай, Роксолана, Київ, Львів є майже завжди у центрі публічної уваги. Дослідивши асоціативні поля цих стимулів ми дійшли висно- вку, що власні назви є не тільки акцентами в інформаційному ландшафті, а є культурними артефактами. Їхнє асоціативне наповнення складається зазвичай з одного, двох чи трьох семантичних гештальтів.
Асоціативний експеримент як один із чинників дослідження власних назв

У цій роботі нас цікавить зворотно-онімічний асоціативний словник. Набір даних, на якому ми базуємо наше дослідження, взято з вільного асоціативного експерименту 2021 року. Експеримент проводився в Одеському університеті імені І. І. Мечникова за участю 100 учасників. Тут ми досліджували кореляції між асоціаціями та стимулами, приділяючи особливу увагу онімічним реакціям. У цій статті ми представляємо записи, складені таким чином: від асоціацій до їх стимулів, перерахованих в алфавітному порядку. Сучасне дослідження виявило, що онімічні реакції охоплюють всю ономастичну термінологічну сферу, наші висновки охоплюють усі основні класи власних назв: антропоніми, топоніми, етноніми, теоніми, ідеоніми, зооніми, хрематоніми, хрононіми, ергоніми, фітоніми, космоніми. Ми робимо висновок, що зворотно-онімічний асоціативний словник є одним із потужних методичних інструментів ономастичних досліджень. Зворотний онімічний асоціативний словник уточнює культурні константи та традиційні меметичні одиниці, які присутні в українському суспільстві.
Асоціативний словничок англійської хрематонімної лексики

Буття англомовних гіппонімів у ментальному лексиконі

У статті аналізуються результати вільного психолінгвістичного асоціативного експерименту, який було проведено з носіями англійської мови з метою висвітлення структури асоціативного поля гіппонімів. Об’єктом дослідження є власні назви коней, що належать до узуального та віртуального скриптів, предметом аналізу — асоціації, які було продуковано на стимули- гіппоніми. Матеріалом дослідження послугували результати опитування 35 інформантів, загальна кількість реакцій яких складає 130 одиниць. Під час дослідження було використано методику вільного асоціативного експерименту з подальшим формуванням семантичного гештальту асоціативного онімного поля (СГАОП). У ролі стимулів було відібрано два гіппоніми узуального скрипту і два гіппоніми віртуального скрипту, кожен з яких є широковідомим та активно циркулює у ЗМІ. У результаті розвідки було виділено основні типи асоціацій: синонімічні, гіперонімічні, меронімічні, символічні, квалітативні, фонетичні та індивідуальні. У процесі аналізу було виявлено, що асоціативне наповнення гіппонімів складається з одного чи двох семантичних гештальтів. Так, більшість аналізованих реакцій характеризують онім-стимул у його цілісності і вписуються в концепт стимулу. Неважко помітити, що асоціаціями для реальних гіппонімів є синонімічні, дескриптивні, іноді пролонговані фрази, тоді як для віртуальних гіппонімів асоціаціями найчастіше стають власні назви творів мистецтва, героями який є коні з таким іменем, або авторів цих творів. Зроблено висновки про те, що гіппоніми реального та віртуального скриптів відіграють важливу роль у культурній традиції та є невід’ємним складником англомовної картини світу. Результати експерименту дають можливість розширити розуміння зоонімної картини світу носіїв англійської мови.
Варіанти імен у колі сучасних уподобань мешканців Одеської області

Проаналізувавши уподобання українців Одеської області стосовно жіночих та чоловічих імен, ми помітили, що чимало інформантів різного віку (20-70-ті рр. народження) віддають перевагу неофіційним утворенням. Збір матеріалів, що проводився анкетним шляхом, передбачає ретельний реєстр і детальний аналіз усіх таких форм імен. Адже залежно від часу, території та сфери вживання антропоніма, а також ставлення того, хто говорить, до названої особистості, структура антропоніма незмінно варіюється. Варіювання є нормальною умовою функціонування особових імен».
