The article examines the works of the French writer Jules Verne, translated into Ukrainian and edited by famous or anonymous Ukrainian artists of the 20th century. The period of the Ukrainian translation movement of the end of the 19th – the first third of the 20th century is characterized by an increase in the number of translated literature in the late 20s of the 20th century. The flourishing of the translation activities in Ukraine in the 1920s was facilitated by the Ukrainian intelligentsia, who knew foreign languages and sought to enrich the national literature. The translators of J. Verne’s works were not only professional writers (Oleksii Varavva, Khrystyna Alchevska, Natalia Romanovych-Tkachenko), but also scientists, publishers, teachers, cultural and theater figures (Tamara Butovych, Leonid Pakharevskyi, Viktor Zhuno, Nadiia Yanko-Trynytska, Pavlo Balytskyi, Dmytro Lysychenko, Natalia Tkachenko-Khodkevich, Kostiantyn Dovgan). For some Ukrainian artists of the 1920s who did not become outspoken Soviet activists, translation became the only possibility of literary earnings (Mykhailo Ivchenko). The increase in the number of translated literature was also facilitated by the policy of the government at that time — the so-called Ukrainization, which actually aimed to spread influence on Ukrainian society and gradually implement Russification. Unfortunately, the general rise of Ukrainian literature in the 20s of the 20th century, including translated literature, was replaced by the era of the “Shooted Revival.”
