The article examines the peculiarities of the worldview and intellectual culture of medieval Europe and their role in shaping the prerequisites for the development of European science. It is emphasized that the traditional perception of the Middle Ages as a period of intellectual stagnation between Antiquity and the Modern era is overly simplified and does not reflect the real complexity of the cultural processes of this epoch. Contemporary research demonstrates that it was precisely within medieval culture that important worldview attitudes emerged, preparing the ground for the formation of rational scientific thinking. One of these attitudes was the belief that the world possesses an internal order created by the divine intellect and therefore can be comprehended by human beings. The article analyzes the theocentric character of the medieval worldview, within which God was regarded as the first cause of existence and the ultimate source of truth, order, and harmony. Particular attention is paid to the symbolic perception of reality characteristic of the culture of that time. The world was interpreted as a system of signs and symbols through which humans could understand the divine plan. In this context, the role of sacred arithmetic is considered, where numbers possessed not only mathematical meaning but also deep symbolic significance, as well as the importance of universals in medieval thinking. Special attention is given to the concept of the triple division of being (“before things”, “in things,” and “after things”), which made it possible to combine the Christian doctrine of the creation of the world with a philosophical explanation of its structure and intelligibility. The article also demonstrates how medieval culture formed the idea of nature as a kind of “book” containing the signs of divine wisdom, the study of which was regarded not only as a practical activity but also as a spiritual path to the knowledge of truth. Considerable attention is devoted to the interaction between the philosophical heritage of Antiquity and Christian theology. It is shown that medieval thinkers actively employed the ideas of ancient authors, particularly Plato and Aristotle, interpreting them in the light of the Christian worldview. The article also analyzes the role of the authority of tradition, which largely determined the intellectual life of the period, as well as the distinctive features of the medieval culture of commentary and interpretation of texts. Another aspect of the study concerns attitudes toward practical knowledge and crafts. It is shown that during the medieval period the opposition between theoretical knowledge and practical activity, characteristic of the ancient tradition, gradually weakened. Practical arts, technology, and mechanics began to be viewed as important means of understanding the laws of nature. The article concludes that medieval culture created a distinctive intellectual tradition in which faith, symbolic thinking, and rational analysis were closely interconnected. This interaction contributed to the formation of new ideas about the world and humanity, the preservation and reinterpretation of the ancient heritage, and the preparation of the foundations for the further development of European philosophy and science.
