| dc.description.abstract | Nowadays there is a growing desire to be an influencer. One of the reasons for that is social media where people can share a word of encouragement or the story of their journey to success. However, before all this online world started to exist, a person would have to either write a book or gather a crowd of listeners in order to reach others with his message. It takes less effort to listen to a speaker than to read a book, and speaker has bigger variety of ways to influence the audience. Everybody has experienced listening to some kind of speeches (lectures in university, seminars, public speeches, sharing one’s personal life). One tends to esteem the speaker after a few minutes of listening to him. People can be impressed by speaker’s talent or professionalism and at the same time completely disagree with him on the subject being presented. The speech is more successful provided listeners have sound reasons to incline to what they hear. Religion can be one of those reasons when it is considered to be nothing else but one’s connection with God. If Bible is the common ground for both sides of communication, listeners feel obligated to do what they are inspired to while the preacher feels responsibility to proclaim the mere truth. For this study, it was of interest to investigate Protestant sermons, particularly from the perspective of both lingual and extralingual features. Although, the research on religious discourse is well-established, Protestant sermons in a combined lingual and extralingual framework has not been sufficiently explored. This work provides valuable insights into how Protestant preachers employ both verbal and non-verbal strategies to covey their message. | |
