Aerosil A-300 was modified to obtain six types of samples differing in the nature of their surface functional groups and the presence of vanadyl complexes on the surface. For the prepared samples and the pristine аerosil A-300, the adsorption kinetics of sulfur dioxide were investigated, and the main adsorption parameters were determined and compared, including the amount of adsorbed SO₂ (Qexp, mol or mg), the specific adsorption capacity (q, mg/g) per gram of sorbent, and the protective action time (τMPC). For the samples without surface vanadyl complexes, the adsorption parameters depended on the type of surface functional groups and decreased in the order –OH > –NH₂ > –N=C. Vanadium(IV) complexes, regardless of the method used for their immobilization on the аerosil surface, exhibited low activity toward sulfur dioxide under the experimental conditions. For these samples, the adsorption performance, depending on the nature of the functional group, decreased in the order –N=C > –OH > –NH₂. Among all the tested samples, pristine аerosil proved to be the most promising sorbent for the removal of low concentrations of sulfur dioxide from air, providing a protective action time of 115 min.
