The article summarizes the experience of teaching the course "Journalistic Skills" at the Faculty of Journalism, Advertising, and Publishing of Odesa I. I. Mechnikov National University. The article highlights approaches to practical training of specialists for the media industry through the publication of an educational periodical. Teamwork on the publication of a newspaper requires the strict implementation of creative tasks, develops critical thinking, and forms mutual responsibility. Future journalists learn in practice to develop a concept for the publication, organize the editorial staff, distribute responsibilities, find topics for their works, write and edit journalistic materials, create an original layout of the issue and ultimately achieve the final result — the publication of a periodical. The relevance of the topic is emphasized by the need to further search for innovative technologies in teaching professionally oriented disciplines for students of journalism education. Scientists note that one of the most important tasks of higher education is preparation for the implementation of specific tasks envisaged by future practical activities. Each higher educational institution that trains professional personnel in the media industry solves the problem of practical training of future journalists in its own way. At the Faculty of Journalism, Advertising, and Publishing of Odesa I. I. Mechnikov National University, the publication of an educational newspaper has become a kind of platform for developing practical skills. Mastering the course "Journalistic Skills", which involves the publication of an educational publication, students try their hand at practical journalism, acquire skills in writing journalistic works, creating a newspaper issue and working in a creative team. At the Faculty of Journalism, Advertising, and Publishing, applicants began publishing the first educational newspaper back in 2005. Nine editorial offices will operate in the 2024/2025 academic year. For the success of studying the academic discipline "Journalistic Skills", several components are necessary, the absence or shortcomings of which can significantly affect the result. First, educational programs should be aimed at the formation of professional skills taking into account modern media trends. The second factor is experienced teachers. It is the head of the editorial office that ensures the coordinated work of the team, helps future journalists to reveal their talent and navigate the choice of specialization. The third important factor is the material and technical base that makes it possible to create an information product. The main task of the creative laboratory is to teach writing. Students who master the newspaper craft acquire universal competencies. The practice of teaching the course "Journalistic Skills", that the publication of an educational newspaper is an effective and proven form of practical training of students throughout the academic year. A business game, as close as possible to the working conditions of real editorial offices of periodicals, encourages students to work on journalistic works, motivates them to reveal their creative potential, and allows them to form their own portfolio. Applicants acquire the skills of independently searching for a relevant topic, collecting and analyzing facts to prepare high-quality journalistic material. By creating educational projects, future journalists learn to develop the concept of the publication, get acquainted with the job responsibilities of members of the editorial team, and acquire teamwork skills. By publishing educational newspapers, students master the basics of layout and layout of a periodical. The search for new approaches to practical training of specialists for the media continues, which opens up prospects for further work on this problem.
