This article addresses a pressing issue — anthroponymic derivation, particularly variants of personal names. The aim of the study is to investigate contemporary variants of popular names based on a survey of respondents, analyse their structural and word-formation features, and identify anthroponymic clusters. Research objectives are to identify patterns in the formation of variants of personal names; to investigate contemporary variants of favourite personal names through a survey; to present anthroponymic clusters of male and female names; to examine methods of creating emotionally evaluative variants; to analyse structural modifications; to identify the factors that play a key role in the formation of personal noun variants. The object of the study is the contemporary variants of favourite personal names of Odesa residents. The subject of the study is anthroponymic clusters and methods of formation, structural modifications (suffixation, truncation, reduplication, truncation-suffix formation) of contemporary variants of favourite names recorded in questionnaires from respondents in the city of Odesa. The empirical data of the study consists of the results of the respondents’ survey (students at Odesa I. I. Mechnikov National University, teachers and students of the Richelieu Scientific Lyceum, and their parents), collected via Google Forms. The source base of the study comprises 100 questionnaires collected using Google Forms. To achieve the research objectives and complete the tasks, general scientific and specialised methods were employed such as analysis and synthesis to carry out theoretical generalisations and systematise the factual material. Also, induction and deduction were used with subsequent clarification of the anthroponymic roots of names and the derivational processes of names. The descriptive method is used in the research to ensure the collection, systematisation, and preparation of data for further processing. The comparative method helps to compare the word-formation models of male and female names, variants of the studied names with those recorded in dictionaries, and variants of names from different regions of Ukraine. Observation and surveys are used to identify general trends in the usage of the analysed names. Also, the method of quantitative counts which involves calculating the frequency of use of linguistic units (personal names in this case). Therefore, the broadest anthroponymic clusters of male names have 6 variants of the name Ivan, 5 variants of the names Tymofii and Oleksii, 4 variants of the names Volodymyr, Hlib, Mykhailo, Illiia and Roman). The broadest anthroponymic clusters of female names have 9 variants of the name Olha, 8 variants of the name Tetiana, 7 variants of the names Halyna, Kateryna, Oleksandra, and Nataliia. In the formation of variants of both female and male personal names, the derivational method of formation prevails. Colloquial variants formed in this way have an emotional connotation, mostly diminutive and affectionate. To convey the emotional and evaluative nuances present in personal names, the following word-formation methods are most used in Odesa: suffixation; truncation (apheresis, syncope, apocope); the truncation-suffixation method; and reduplication. The most productive method for creating colloquial variants of personal names is suffixation. For male names, the most frequent suffixes are -k(o), -ik (-ik), -chyk; and for female names, -k(a), -ochk(a), -us(ya), -as(ya), -yenk(a).
