Problem Statements and Purpose. The article addresses the fundamental principles of coastal studies as a constituent domain of contemporary geographical science, specifically the morphology of the coastal zone. This field emerged through the evolutionary differentiation of coastal research within exogenous geomorphology and in response to pressing practical demands. It delineates the characteristics of coastal-marine relief and its morphodynamic properties, provides typological examples of abrasion landforms, identifies non-wave (non-hydrogenic) factors and processes shaping seashores, traces the genesis and development of estuarine relief, and considers the attributes and implications of anthropogenic landforms along the coasts of non-tidal seas. The role of coastal-marine morphodynamics in supporting the optimization of environmental management is emphasized. The study is both timely and significant, with clear theoretical and applied relevance. Its purpose is to undertake a comparative analysis of the dominant factors, processes, and regularities governing the structure and dynamics of major coastal landforms, with the ultimate aim of advancing the rational utilization of natural resources. Data and Methods. For this study, empirical materials were derived from the author’s own investigations of coastal-marine landforms across shorelines of both tidal and non-tidal seas at various latitudes, within diverse landscape-climatic zones of Eurasia and North America. Particular attention was devoted to the wave regime, the intensity of the wave field, and the physicochemical properties of the bedrock composing the coastal-marine relief, with an emphasis on assessing rock resistance to abrasion. These factors exert a decisive influence on the emergence, evolution, and morphometry of coastal landforms. In addition, relevant publications by other researchers from different countries were incorporated. The methodological basis of the study consisted primarily of geomorphological approaches for identifying endogenous and exogenous factors and processes governing coastal-marine relief formation. Methods employed included morphological analysis, geomorphological mapping, relief classification, regionalization of landforms, and systems analysis of relief under the influence of hydrodynamic factors and processes. The methods were selected to ensure that the results and conclusions could be applied in a rational and practically relevant manner. Results. The further development of coastal studies has led to its differentiation into distinct subfields, among which the study of the morphodynamics of coastal-marine relief occupies a central position. At present, it is appropriate to distinguish and examine the following areas: (1) the history of the origin and formation of morphodynamics; (2) natural and anthropogenic conditions on marine coasts and their morphodynamic characteristics; (3) the morphodynamics of subaerial and submarine abrasion landforms; (4) the morphodynamics of accumulative landforms; (5) the morphodynamics of landforms of non-wave origin; (6) the morphodynamics of estuarine landforms; and (7) anthropomorphic lithogenesis in the coastal zone and along sea coasts. The morphodynamics of the coastal zone possesses considerable practical significance, which has stimulated the development of engineering morphodynamics of coasts. This branch formulates concepts for the design of coastal protection structures that, through interaction with the mobile coastal-marine environment, provide artificial analogues of stable relief and prevent its destruction. However, the stability of natural relief is ensured precisely by its mobility and dynamism, in harmony with active natural factors. Against this background, engineering morphodynamics requires substantial conceptual refinement and a reconsideration of its theoretical foundations. Research into coastal morphodynamics has essential theoretical value for the advancement of general geographical theory, the theory of exogenous geomorphology, and the further development of coastal science. Its practical significance lies in providing a natural basis for the planning and operation of coastal protection, port, navigational, recreational, resource-extractive, transport, residential, and other facilities and activities along marine coasts.en
