Selecting a character's name is a complex and often lengthy process. Great masters of the artistic word carefully worked on each name in the work. After all, to give a name to a hero is to define an image. Alexandr Pushkin himself wrote that choosing a name for a character is not easier than writing an entire chapter of the novel in verse. Pushkin's plans and drafts help to see Pushkin's work on choosing a name in the text. The report traces the methods of selecting anthroponymic nominations for the characters of the novels «The Captain's Daughter», «Dubrovsky», prosaic passages, etc. Studying the creative laboratory of Alexander Pushkin, it can be noted that he gave at first temporary names for the characters, then «tried on» others, until he was fully consistent with the name of the image. Pushkin often used the names and surnames of familiar people (protonyms), formed names from geographical names and modified real names by substitution. Pushkin's innovation was the first realization of realistic anthroponomy in realistic prose in Russian literature.
