The article presents the results of a theoretical and empirical study of the psychological factors influencing the perception of the gender of virtual assistants. The relevance of the problem is determined by the active integration of artificial intelligence systems into everyday human life and the gradual transformation of digital agents from technical tools into quasi-social participants in communicative interaction. It is substantiated that the gender of a virtual assistant is not an exclusively technological characteristic, but is formed in the process of the user’s psychological interpretation of the voice, speech style, communicative manner, name, and personalized responses of the digital system. The theoretical basis of the study comprises the principles of contemporary gender psychology, cyberpsychology, the concept of social perception, and the anthropomorphization of digital agents. The aim of the article is to examine the psychological features of users’ perception of the gender characteristics of virtual assistants and to identify the relationship between gender attitudes, the level of anthropomorphization, and the nature of users’ interpretation of digital agents. The empirical study was conducted among young people aged 18–25 years (n = 30) who had experience interacting with artificial intelligence systems. The study used an author-designed questionnaire, the Gender Bias Quiz adapted by T. O. Kostina and I. S. Bulakh, S. Bem’s Bem Sex Role Inventory, as well as descriptive statistics and Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient. It was found that respondents tend to perceive virtual assistants simultaneously as functional technological systems and as conditional interlocutors endowed with socially and gender-marked characteristics. Statistically significant relationships were identified between the level of anthropomorphization and positive attitudes toward virtual assistants, as well as between users’ gender attitudes and the nature of their gender interpretation of digital agents. It is shown that more flexible gender characteristics of the personality are associated with a decrease in stereotypical perception, whereas an orientation toward traditional role models may intensify gender categorization. The practical significance of the findings lies in the possibility of using them in the development of psychologically comfortable, gender-sensitive, and useroriented artificial intelligence systems.
