The article examines the axiolinguistic markers of Ukrainian national identity narratives and analyzes the linguistic mechanisms through which collective historical experience and value systems are verbalized, interpreted, and transmitted. The study focuses on the contemporary transformation of Ukraine’s narrative landscape and identifies three dominant national narratives – the “struggle narrative,” the “civic unity narrative,” and the “multicultural narrative.” The previously influential pro-Soviet and dual (pro-Russian) identity narratives have been largely eliminated from the public sphere since 2014 and especially after the full-scale Russian invasion in 2022. The research is grounded in the theoretical frameworks of narrative identity (P. Ricoeur, E. Laclau & Ch. Mouffe), axiolinguistics, and cognitive discourse studies. National narratives are understood as dynamic semiotic systems that organize collective memory, shape the perception of historical events, and define the boundaries between the in-group (“us”) and the out-group (“them”). Based on materials from CAT-UA analytical reports, historical textbooks of different periods, and in-depth interviews, the article analyzes 110 lexical units functioning as axiolinguistic markers. These markers verbalize key value-laden concepts such as freedom, independence, resistance, historical trauma, heroism, cultural authenticity, democracy, and civic agency. The study demonstrates that lexemes and phraseological units with strong emotional and evaluative potential play a crucial role in the formation of narrative identity. They activate collective meanings, shape ideological frameworks, and influence behavior through simplified binary oppositions (e.g., freedom/slavery, own/alien, truth/betrayal). The article highlights that in contemporary Ukraine the construction of national identity is increasingly driven by shared experiences of resistance, consolidation, and civic participation, rather than by ethnic or linguistic homogeneity. Detailed attention is given to the mechanisms through which competing narratives reinterpret the same historical events, selectively emphasize different symbolic periods (Kyivan Rus’, Cossack era, the Soviet period, the Independence era, the Revolution of Dignity), and construct alternative models of national subjectivity. The “struggle narrative” emphasizes cultural authenticity, historical injustice, and the continuity of resistance; the “civic unity narrative” foregrounds state-building, democratic values, and collective responsibility; the “multicultural narrative” prioritizes inclusivity, pluralism, and polyethnic heritage. The analysis confirms that despite internal differences, the three Ukrainian narratives share several core concepts – freedom, agency, democratic tradition, and a forward-oriented vision of national development. These shared values constitute the foundation for a future strategic national narrative of Ukraine. The article concludes that the development of a coherent strategic narrative is an urgent task for contemporary Ukraine. Such a narrative should consolidate shared values, counteract disinformation and aggressive foreign narratives, strengthen national resilience, and provide a unified communicative framework for presenting Ukrainian identity in the international arena.
