The article discusses the collection "АВС" (“Abecadło” by Nobel Prize laureate C. Milosz from the point of view of artistic techniques for presenting the writer’s past. It is emphasized that the book presents the artist’s own biography in a broad cultural, historical, and philosophical context. The book, designed as a private dictionary, each article of which is an essay dedicated to figures, locations, events, meetings, etc. from the life of C. Milosz, offers the author’s version of understanding the past as a union of autobiographical elements and philosophical reflections. In the collection “АВС” by C. Milosz, the past is presented as the author’s re-creation of eclectic existence: by means of a reflexive-interpretive appeal to his own life in the context of European and American history of the 20th century, the artist in a certain way recreates himself in a new way in the context of the mentioned and reinterpreted events, memories, meetings, portraits, and reflections from a distance of time, which act as objects and subjects of the dictionary “articles” of his private “dictionary”. The past, from the point of view of the Polish author, cannot be understood as a monolithic formation. It is so variegated that the only possible way of depicting it is to present it in fragments collected together. C. Milosz offers his own approach to depicting the past through the subjective reconstruction of what was experienced in various registers and perspectives (this concerns events, situations, books read, learned artistic, cultural and social practices in topological, existential, axiological, philosophical, historical and documentary contexts) as a means of acquiring and constructing the artist’s own identity in the twentieth century. The texts of the book present frank and not very pages of the artist’s biography against the background of the era that the author himself absorbed in full, so he calls the twentieth century “his”. The author’s life path in the book appears bright, colorful, often ironic and sad at the same time. It includes locations in Poland, Lithuania, France and America, hundreds of surnames, numerous titles of books, awards, and other projects. The writer, having considerable personal and writing experience, presents his own discourse of memory in the collection “АВС”, focused on the origins of his own creativity, on the ideas that filled his texts in the 20th century under the influence of revolutions, wars, reforms, personal life experience, which already has the right to be organized from a distance of years, etc. Therefore, memory acts in C. Milosz as the most important factor in the interpretation and creation of a polydiscursive text and is directly related to the problem of the artist's self-identification as a postcolonial subject, which exists on the border of many cultures and historical layers, and therefore becomes a measure of the authenticity of the history of the artistic personality in the historical process. The theme of memory in “АВС” is specific in that it represents not only the usual connection of memories and their certain reconstruction in the conventional modern, but also bears the echo of different cultures and artistic practices of the artist, which intersect in the border space of the postcolonial text. This approach of the author to the problems of commemoration individualizes the collective memory of the twentieth century through the constant switching of the reader’s attention to semiotic, topological, axiological, figurative-interpretative, reflexive, personological, and representational practices. The discourse of memory of C. Milosz thus acquires signs of nonlinearity, fragmentation, and dispersion of the author’s “self” in numerous characters of his own life and is formalized as a permanent re-creation of his own biography from a distance of years.
