Дисертація на здобуття наукового ступеня доктора філософії за спеціальністю 032 - Історія та археологія. - Одеський національний університет імені І.І. Мечникова, м. Одеса, 2026. - Кваліфікаційна наукова праця на правах рукопису.
Вступ висвітлює актуальність теми роботи, визначає об’єкт та предмет дослідження, хронологічні та територіальні рамки дисертації.
Визначаються мета і завдання дослідження, методологія, наукова новизна та практичне значення. Перелік публікацій та участі в конференціях, що засвідчують апробацію результатів дисертації, надається.
Перший розділ дисертаційного дослідження присвячено теоретичним і методологічним основам. Аналізуються і систематизуються ключові теоретичні засади, на яких базується дослідження етнічної ідентичності. Приділено увагу формуванню науково-понятійного апарату, уточненню термінології, зокрема поняття «єврейська ідентичність», у контексті історико етнографічного дискурсу. Окрему частину розділу присвячено всебічному аналізу стану наукової розробки теми в українській та зарубіжній історіографії, що дозволяє оцінити ступінь її дослідженості та окреслити наявні прогалини у висвітленні проблеми. Здійснено комплексний аналіз джерельної бази дослідження, що охоплює архівні матеріали, періодичну пресу, наративні джерела та матеріали етнографічних експедицій, які слугують підґрунтям для виявлення, аналізу та систематизації маркерів єврейської ідентичності. Розділ обґрунтовує вибір методів та підходів, які будуть застосовані в роботі, що забезпечує її наукову об'єктивність та системність.
Другий розділ присвячений вивченню географічних, соціальних та економічних умов, які сформували єврейську спільноту Балтського повіту. Розглядається історична топографія регіону, що включає аналіз особливостей заселення та динаміки демографічних процесів. Досліджується структура єврейського населення, його професійна зайнятість та роль у економічному житті повіту. Особливу увагу приділено впливу єврейської громади на формування урбаністичного ландшафту та поширення топоніма містечко (штетл). Розділ висвітлює основні історичні події, які вплинули на формування ідентичності, та створює контекст для подальшого аналізу соціокультурних практик.
Третій розділ присвячений аналізу впливу офіційної антисемітської політики Російської імперії на життя єврейських громад, включаючи правовий статус, обмеження та заходи, спрямовані на зросійщення. Розділ висвітлює роль історичних подій, які вплинули на формування ідентичності, та створює контекст для подальшого аналізу соціокультурних практик, які застосовувалися як протидія внутрішньополітичному тиску.
У четвертому розділі досліджується динаміка і трансформація соціокультурних практик єврейської спільноти наприкінці XIX - на початку XX століття. Розділ присвячено комплексній історико-етнографічній реконструкції повсякденного життя та соціокультурних практик єврейської спільноти Балтського повіту. У ньому детально розглядається комплекс традиційних інститутів і звичаїв, як маркерів ідентичності. Зокрема сімейні обряди (цикл життя, свята), релігійні інституції (синагоги, хедери) та форми господарсько-побутової діяльності, що віддзеркалювали специфіку єврейської культури. Аналізується функціонування практик обрядово-побутових в умовах полікультурного середовища, у взаємодії з іншими етнічними та конфесійними групами. Особлива увага приділяється механізмам, за допомогою яких ці практики забезпечували внутрішню консолідацію громади, передачу культурної спадщини та збереження ідентичності в умовах відсутності власної державності. На основі аналізу різноманітних джерел, включно з матеріалами етнографічних експедицій, розділ створює цілісну картину життя єврейського штетла, підкреслюючи його унікальні риси.

Introduction highlights the relevance of the research topic and defines the object and subject of the study, as well as the chronological and territorial scope of the dissertation. The purpose and objectives of the research, methodological framework, scientific novelty, and practical significance are outlined. A list of publications and conference presentations demonstrating the approbation of the dissertation results is also provided. Chapter One of the dissertation is devoted to the theoretical and methodological foundations of the study. It analyzes and systematizes the key theoretical principles underlying the investigation of ethnic identity. Particular attention is paid to the development of the conceptual and terminological framework, including the clarification of the concept of “Jewish identity” within the context of historical and ethnographic discourse. A separate section provides a comprehensive analysis of the state of research on the topic in both Ukrainian and international historiography, making it possible to assess the extent of its scholarly exploration and identify existing research gaps. A comprehensive analysis of the source base is conducted, encompassing archival materials, periodical publications, narrative sources, and ethnographic expedition materials, which serve as the foundation for identifying, analyzing, and systematizing markers of Jewish identity. The chapter substantiates the selection of methods and approaches employed in the study, ensuring its scientific objectivity and systematic character. Chapter Two is devoted to the examination of the geographical, social, and economic conditions that shaped the Jewish community of Balta County. It explores the historical topography of the region, including patterns of settlement and demographic dynamics. The structure of the Jewish population, its occupational composition, and its role in the county’s economic life are analyzed. Particular attention is paid to the influence of the Jewish community on the formation of the urban landscape and the emergence of the shtetl (small Jewish town) as a distinctive settlement type. The chapter highlights the major historical developments that influenced identity formation and provides the context necessary for further analysis of socio-cultural practices. Chapter Three focuses on the impact of the official antisemitic policies of the Russian Empire on the lives of Jewish communities, including their legal status, various restrictions, and measures aimed at Russification. The chapter examines the role of historical events in shaping Jewish identity and provides a contextual framework for analyzing the socio-cultural practices employed as mechanisms of resistance to internal political pressure. Chapter Four investigates the dynamics and transformation of the socio-cultural practices of the Jewish community in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It is devoted to a comprehensive historical and ethnographic reconstruction of the everyday life and socio-cultural practices of the Jewish community of Balta County. The chapter examines in detail a range of traditional institutions and customs that functioned as markers of identity, including family rituals (life-cycle ceremonies and religious holidays), religious institutions (synagogues and cheders), and forms of economic and domestic activity reflecting the distinctive features of Jewish culture. It analyzes the functioning of ritual and everyday practices within a multicultural environment and in interaction with other ethnic and confessional groups. Particular attention is paid to the mechanisms through which these practices ensured internal community cohesion, facilitated the transmission of cultural heritage, and preserved identity in the absence of statehood. Based on a wide range of sources, including materials from ethnographic expeditions, the chapter reconstructs a holistic picture of life in the Jewish shtetl, emphasizing its unique characteristics.
