На основі публікацій одеської періодичної преси другої половини ХІХ — початку ХХ ст. показана зацікавленість як державних структур, так і громадських організацій і приватних осіб в установі вищого технічного навчального закладу в Одесі.The publication is dated to the 95th anniversary of Odesa National Polytechnic University (1918-2013). The subject of the article lies in studying prerequisites of organization of the technical college on the south of Ukraine. A concept of its necessity has occurred to enlightened people of our city in the middle of 19th century, that was reflected in periodical press of that time. The purpose of this study is an exposure of such publications appeared against a background of political and social situation in the city and in the country. The author used general scientific methodology as well as special methods of bibliographic studies. The findings of the study is analysis of publications in Odesa periodicals of the middle of 19th — early 20th centuries, that touched on questions of organization of higher technical education, discussed motives of opening of technical college in Odesa, and broached problems of purely methodic character (curriculums, educational programs, type and structure of future college, etc.). In the course of the study it reflect the role of state and especially public organizations in the case of founding of polytechnic college in Odesa. The article is intended for to historians of science and for students of local lore, for scientists who study formation of technical education in the Russian Empire and in Novorossiisky Region in particular. Resting upon the results of research, the author draws a conclusion that formation of higher technical education in Odesa had begun in the middle of 19th century.
