The author examines in detail the historical context of this conflict, drawing attention to the 1855 Treaty on Trade and Frontiers between Japan and Russia, which formed the basis for Japan's claims to these territories. The legal aspects of the dispute are discussed, taking into account the statements of the leadership of both countries regarding sovereignty over the Northern Islands. The article also analyzes the impact of this conflict on the geopolitical situation in the Asia–Pacific region. In particular, the author examines the implications for international security and diplomatic relations between Japan and Russia, as well as their relations with other countries in the region. The author relies on various sources, including official statements of the leadership, as well as academic publications and analytical materials. The conclusions of the article are important for understanding the dynamics of relations between Japan and Russia and their impact on stability in the Asia-Pacific region.
