dc.description.abstractThe article provides an overview of the history of the formation of ASEAN and describes outlines its structure and decisionmaking mechanisms. In the last few years, there has been a growing interest in the Southeast Asian and Asia Pacific international affairs. The objective of this article is to determine the peculiarities of the organization, to define its activities in the security and economic dimensions. The article outlines the structure of the organization and its decisionmaking mechanisms. The main initiatives and tools of the Association in the fields of security and economy are described. Special attention is paid to the causes and factors that have contributed to the deepening of integration and cooperation in the indicated areas. The main reasons for the formation of ASEAN were the growth of communist threat in the region, the beginning of the Cold War and unresolved conflicts. Main goals include the creation of a zone of security in the region and sustainable economic development. During the years of its existence, the Association significantly improved the overall development of the region, fostered intensive cooperation and became an influential actor not only in the Asia-Pacific, but also in the world. Nevertheless, there are significant obstacles that limit the authority of ASEAN.
