dc.description.abstractУ статті досліджується поняття Середньовіччя як специфічної епохи в історії європейської цивілізації та його відображення в культурологічній думці. Розглядаються різні підходи до вивчення Середньовіччя, які сформувалися в культурології, а також способи інтерпретації цієї епохи у зв’язку з її релігійною, соціальною та інтелектуальною спадщиною. Особлива увага приділяється динаміці уявлень про Середньовіччя, його впливу на сучасну культуру та проблематиці осмислення його місця в загальноісторичному контексті. Порушується питання міфологізації Середньовіччя та виникнення нових інтерпретацій цього періоду в сучасному культурологічному аналізі. uk
dc.description.abstractThis article examines the concept of the Middle Ages as a distinct era in the history of European civilization and its reflection in cultural thought. It explores various approaches to studying the Middle Ages that have developed within cultural studies, as well as ways of interpreting this period in relation to its religious, social, and intellectual heritage. Special attention is given to the evolving perceptions of the Middle Ages, its influence on modern culture, and the challenges of understanding its place in the broader historical context. Beginning with Flavio Biondo, who laid the foundation for the historical study of this period, we observe the initial view of the Middle Ages as a distinct phase concluding with the revival of classical values. Voltaire, a well-known critic of the medieval period, highlighted its backwardness and “darkness”, reinforcing a negative view that later resonated within the Enlightenment. In contrast, the Romantics, inspired by an idealized past, uncovered in the Middle Ages a rich cultural layer, an aesthetic, and an imaginative sensitivity that enriched modern art and literature. Later, Johan Huizinga emphasized the complexity and inner dynamism of this era, pointing to the development of symbolic thought and a culture of sensory experience. Contemporary researchers, such as Jacques Le Goff and Umberto Eco, offer a comprehensive approach that considers the Middle Ages as a period of complex cultural evolution significant for the formation of European identity. Le Goff highlighted the impact of medieval mentality on the modern era, while Eco focused on the mythologization of the Middle Ages, which has become part of contemporary popular culture. Thus, the historical and cultural assessment of the Middle Ages has evolved from negative evaluations to multidimensional study, emphasizing not only the uniqueness of this period but also its influence on modern culture. The Middle Ages are an essential component of European identity, continuing to inspire today as a source of ideas, aesthetics, and profound cultural meanings.en
