The article focuses on the synergistic capabilities of sound design within cross-media journalistic production and its contribution to the development of a unified audiovisual narrative. The relevance of this topic stems from the ongoing shifts in the modern media environment, where journalistic content is increasingly distributed across diverse platforms and formats — including written texts, multimedia longreads, podcasts, video stories, and interactive formats. In this context, sound transcends its traditional supportive or illustrative role and emerges as an essential expressive element of media communication. The study seeks to explore how sound design functions as a mechanism for integrating various media components within cross-media journalism. It identifies the principal elements of sound design — such as voice-over narration, synchronous sound, ambient and background audio, musical layers, and sound effects — and examines how these interact with visual and textual aspects of journalistic content. Particular emphasis is placed on the role of sound in intensifying emotional perception, shaping the atmosphere of events, and fostering deeper audience immersion. The article argues that the synergistic value of sound design lies in the interplay of different media elements, whose combination produces a qualitatively new level of audience perception that cannot be achieved when each component operates in isolation. Within cross-media projects, sound design can fulfill multiple roles, including structuring the narrative, emphasizing key semantic elements, organizing rhythm, and amplifying the emotional impact of the message. The study concludes that the deliberate and well-considered use of sound design enhances the expressive qualities of journalistic content, strengthens its communicative effectiveness, and contributes to a more integrated media experience. The findings may be utilized in the creation of multimedia journalistic content by future media professionals, particularly within educational courses focused on audiovisual journalism, multimedia storytelling, and cross-media communication. These approaches are especially valuable in the practical activities of student newsrooms at the Faculty of Journalism, Advertising, and Publishing of Odesa I. I. Mechnikov National University, where cross-media projects are actively developed.
