Thinking, which in its essence is a phenomenon of freedom of movement of human consciousness, is in opposition to any totalitarian state, from manifestations of consciousness to actions in everyday life. Totalitarianism in thinking means anti-thinking, denial of thinking at its core. There are many types of totalitarian systems that have different social goals, but similar typical characteristics, as the mechanism for achieving these goals is total control over saying, behavior, personal life and even the personal opinion of each citizen. Artificially arranged lifestyle programs thinking and determines everyday behavior. He is actually forming a new person with distorted morals. This paper considers the typical characteristics of the totalitarian regime, which form the thinking and norms of public and personal behavior. These include: the cult of tradition and syncretism, rejection of criticism, the cult of action for the sake of action, rejection of pacifism, and cultivation of the idea of the enemy and conspiracy, subordination of private life to collective interests in order to achieve a common goal. The manifestation of mass consciousness and forms of control over it are shown. Contradictory properties of the masses have been identified – conservatism, neutrality, political indifference, inertia of behavior, which are combined with maximalism in thinking, the desire to achieve the cherished goal. Mass behavior is most pronounced in the crowd, where individual consciousness disappears and mental community emerges. The individual ceases to be himself and becomes a machine that has no will of its own. It has been found that these traits are characteristic of the masses not only in the moment of revolutionary ecstasy, but also in everyday life. Totalitarian thinking is characterized by intolerance and bigotry, deification of its leader and attributing to him mystical power, which acquire religious obsession. The most destructive thing is that even after the fall of the totalitarian regime, the mass consciousness does not disappear, it continues to influence on the daily behavior of people. Possibilities of reducing the influence of the totalitarian factor on consciousness through the practices of reflection of thinking, strengthening the discriminative capacity of consciousness and the use of the principles of neurophysiology of the brain are shown. Expanding the dimension of thinking allows you to increase its depth and comprehensiveness, thus freeing the subject from the shackles of totalitarianism.
