Sound [f] did not exist in the Pre-Slavonic Language that could be accounted for by bilabial character of a voiced sound [w], which was, concequently, a sonant not requiring voiceless pair. This state remained partially in the Ukrainian, Belarusian and some other Slavonic languages. That results in substitutions of the sound [f] in Christian names, compare Ukr. Pilip, Bulg. Hilup, but Rus. Filipp. Development of onomastic dialectology is necessary for the understanding of spreading of substitutions and preservations of [f] as well as other phonetic and wordbuilding pecularities of proper names. |
