Paper presents historical survey of the beginning of algological studies in the Odessa (former Imperial Novorossiysk) University in the second half of the 19th century. The main contribution to the study of algae was done by professors on Botany of the given university: Dmitriy A. Baikov, Leo.S. Tsenkovsky, Jakob J. Walz, Ludvig V. Reingard, Ludvig A. Rischawi, as well as their students I. F. Koshug, N.K. Sredinsky, I.V. Krasilshchyk, G.S. Voltke, V.F. Khemelevsky, etc. Their researches concerned study of species composition of algae in continental water bodies of Odessa region and the Black Sea near Odessa and Crimean coasts. Various groups of algae (yellow-green algae, diatoms, brown, red and green algae) were studied in terms of their floristic, morphological and biological peculiarities, as well as the origin of the Black Sea algal flora. New methods of algae investigation were worked out. Professor Tsenkovsky initiated the establishment of the Sevastopol biological station, the first marine biological station in the Russian Empire. Algological studies were carried out in close cooperation with foreign colleagues; university lecturers collaborated with European phycologists, had professional training in foreign laboratories and took part in international scientific expeditions.
