У статті розглянуто функції епіграфів як інтертекстуальних маркерів у сучасному фентезі. Досліджено
джерела запозичень та зроблено висновок, що в українському фентезі переважають питомі українські джерела,
у російському – цитати зі світової літератури та елементи фіктивної інтертекстуальності. Розкрито значення епіграфа
як метатекстового елемента, проаналізовано його функції. У романі Д. Корній інформативна функція епіграфа пов’язує
його з заголовком і текстом підрозділу. У романі М. Петросян переважає сугестивна роль епіграфа, що створює настрій
і впливає на розуміння тексту.

The article analyzes the functions of the epigraph as one of the intertextual markers in modern fantasy (Ukrainian and Russian). The relevance of the article lies in the fact that comprehensive studies of intertextuality in modern fantasy texts have not yet been presented. The purpose of the article is to identify the specifics of the functioning of the epigraph in modern fantasy. The authors perform important pragmatic tasks, establishing a hierarchy of meanings and focusing attention in the strong position of the epigraph on the emotional and aesthetic effect. The sources of borrowing are investigated and the conclusion is made that primordially Ukrainian sources (literary and folklore, from modern and classical Ukrainian literature) prevail in Ukrainian fantasy, and in Russian quotes from world literature or elements of fictitious intertextuality are more often used. The significance of the epigraph as a metatext element is revealed and the informative and suggestive functions of the epigraph are studied. It is concluded that the epigraphs in both texts influence the understanding of the text and are closely related to its content, but the informative function plays a more significant role in the novel of the Ukrainian writer Dara Korniy, which is reflected in the paratextual connection of the epigraph with the title and text of the chapter. A quote that is placed in the epigraph may be included verbatim in the text. In the novel by Mariam Petrosyan, epigraphs play a suggestive role ‒ they create mood and, in turn, influence the understanding of the text and create a peculiar connection of the novel with the corresponding moods of world literature, in particular, L. Carroll’s absurd work «The Hunting of the Snark». A citation made in a strong position can refer to pseudo-intertextuality, that is, to belong to the pen of the same author. The choice of an epigraph may also be related to the nature of the subject of the action. In addition, the shorter the title of the chapter, the more the informative function of the epigraph increases, with the meaningful title of the chapter the suggestive function prevails. Both authors have noted particular care in choosing citation sources for creating epigraphs.
