The Dnister water is the main source of drinking water supply of Odessa and adjacent areas, influencing the current level of life quality for more than million inhabitants of Odessa Region. The Lower Dnister and the Dnister delta suffer all the trans-boundary problems which emerge due to unwise and uncoordinated water management, lack of sanitary-protection zones and non-fulfillment of requirements of nature-protection sanitary norms and rules. The Regional Center for Integrated Monitoring and Ecological Studies under Odessa National I.I.Mechnikov University, in the framework of the researches funded from the budget of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine in 2003-2009, with the financial support from the EU Tacis project carries out annual complex studies of the Lower Dnister ecosystem since 2003. The results have shown the increase of anthropogenic load on the Lower Dnister basin in the last years. At that, the main problems are nutrient and microbiological pollution. The aim of our studies is modern assessment of ecological state of water quality in the deltaic part of the Dnister, from the Kuchurgany Reservoir to the Black Sea.uk
