In the course of the SEBI-2010 fulfillment the European experts have suggested 26 indicators for all kinds of ecosystems, out of which 10 indicators (abundance and distribution of some species; red book index for the European species; species of European significance; description of habitats of European significance; description of national protected areas; invasive species; availability of the species sensitive for temperature variations; marine trophic index; content of nutrients in transitional, coastal and marine waters; commercial fish stock) have the priority significance for assessment of state of marine systems biodiversity. In the framework of the studies performed in the Zmiinyi Island area Odessa National I.I.Mechnikov University in 2011 started implementation of the project «Establishing of Integrated Environmental Monitoring System to Assess the Quality of the Black Sea Marine Environment Adjacent to the Zmiinyi Island», the methodology of which is based on the approaches recommended by the SEBI-2010 Project and the current EU Directives.
