The little-known facts about personal life, career and creative activity of one of the leading representatives of the Novorossiya University, assistant to the director of the library and the head of its student department Mykhailo Hryhorovych are revealed. The biographical method of research was used when writing the article. Original printed works on the history of Odesa and the university (reports, student lists, minutes of meetings of the academic council, Odesa Ukrainian periodicals of the period of revolution and civil war, etc.) were used as a source basis. The documents from the personal file of M. Hryhorovych that is stored in the State Archive of the Odesa region are introduced into the scientific circulation for the first time. His participation in military operations in the Far East in 1905 during the Russo-Japanese War is reconstructed. The fact that he was surrounded by people of different political views is demonstrated. Among them people were many people who played a leading role in the national movement of the city. M. Hryhorovych was a member of the Ukrainian association “Prosvita” that contained many professors, lecturers, students, employees of the Novorossiya University and members of their families. He was conscripted into the army out of reserve on 1st August 1914 and found himself on the Romanian front in a special expedition in fort Reni, where he was a chief of the team of the 476th Kherson State Militia. The main task of the expedition was to supply Serbia with everything necessary for the war: weapons, ammunition food, etc. In 1917, when Odesa become the southern epicenter of the Ukrainian Revolution and was under influence of the Ukrainian government, M. Hryhorovych strongly supported the Ukrainization of Russian army and actively used military press to promote the Ukrainian idea among soldiers. M. Hryhorovych presented his powerful speeches that helped to form the ideological face of Odesa periodicals in Ukrainian language on the pages of such journals as «Ridnyi kurin», «Chornomorska khvylia» and «Zaporozhets».
