Анотація
Пропонована стаття є спробою визначити та схарактеризувати явище компресії
при перекладі художнього тексту з української мови на англійську. У статті
наголошується, що власне граматичні розбіжності порівнюваних мов є першопричиною згортання тексту перекладу.
Предлагаемая статья является попыткой определить и охарактеризовать явление компрессии при переводе художественного текста с украинского языка на английский. В статье подчеркивается, что именно грамматические расхождения сравниваемых языков являются первопричиной свертывания текста перевода.
The given article outlines the peculiarities of compression in the process of translation from Ukrainian into English. The research has been done on the basis of the short story ‘The Little Hunchback’ by Spyrydon Cherkasenko and its translation into English performed by Anatole Bilenko. Compression is mainly used while translating Ukrainian attributive, object and adverbial clauses. In the process of translation they are mainly rendered using English participle I and II, and participial I complex object construction; English infinitive and infinitive complex object construction, English gerund. Sentence integration is one more example of compression. Divergences in the English and Ukrainian languages mainly on the grammatical level or absence of some grammatical forms and complexes in Ukrainian required the usage of different grammatical transformations in the process of translation (mostly substitution of parts of speech, sentence members, sentence types and transposition of the sentence members). These transformations led to the shortening of the target text, thus to compression of the target text.
